1000 Hands is a mobile app and installation that invites users to contribute line drawings to a collective, evolving digital work of art.

We brings the users’ fingertip-touchscreen interaction to life, extending their gestures into dancing, poetic musical forms. Together, the submitted drawings combine to form a harmonious chorus celebrating the living drawn line.

The app is full of surprises for users to discover, as drawing specific shapes reveals hidden forms, behaviours and appearances. Using shape recognition, the artwork responds acutely to user input, building on our ongoing exploration of synaesthesia.

The artwork was commissioned for Media Space London’s inaugural exhibition.
