A procession of ‘impossible’ animals for a Zhang Yimou production

Ethereal marks our first commission for theatrical production – a film work for a 900sq m 4K LED screen, accompanied by live music and kinetic sculpture.

We created Ethereal for director Zhang Yimou's (House of Flying Daggers, 2008 Beijing Olympics opening ceremony) residency show Macau 2049.

Macau 2049 features eight chapters, all of which blend traditional art forms with advanced technology and aim to bridge the past and the future of human civilisation.

Our five-minute film presents a vibrant, kaleidoscopic procession of ‘impossible’ animals moving with one shared purpose towards the future. These animals are created from stone, wood and flowers, changing over time as they make a steadfast journey onwards, through the four seasons, across the theatre's expansive screen.

The film is accompanied live on stage by traditional khoomei (throat) singers and a diaphanous kinetic sculpture that dances in front of musicians.

Macau 2049 runs until 27th April 2025 at the MGM Cotai theatre.
